What are epoxy Flakes? Are they made out of epoxy? Although they are often referred to as color flakes, epoxy flakes, color chips, or epoxy paint chips, these awesome, tiny little pieces of color can help create some of the most beautiful custom garage epoxy flake floors you’ll ever see. All it takes is a little creativity.
In the epoxy flake floors industry, they are simply known as flakes or vinyl color flakes. In reality, they are polymer paint aggregates made up of a combination of acrylic and vinyl resins.
When properly applied to an epoxy flake floor, they form together to create a 4-5 mil thick flake on top of the epoxy base coat. The more flakes applied to the floor, the less important the color of the base coat becomes. Applied properly, the base coat will never be seen unless you’re going for a tile look in which case the base coat would determine the grout color.
The flakes are available in more than 175 colors and can be custom made based on any color of the rainbow.
By far, the most popular size for garage floors is 1/4″. Although each flake is random in shape, they are available in sizes ranging from 1″ in diameter down to 1/32″. They are UV stable.
The colors are blended together in order to create a particular color combination. They are applied at a coverage that is determined by our customers. The most popular choice is 100% full coverage.
Coverage rates vary from light, medium, heavy, and full. We keep enough flakes on hand to cover the floor with approximately 8 pounds per square foot.
With 100% coverage, the flakes are broadcast into the base coat in what is known as “Broadcast to refusal.” Basically, that means we keep throwing flakes into the base coat until they simply cannot stick to anything.
Other coverage rates are as follows:
- Light coverage – 1 ounce per square foot
- Medium coverage – 5 ounces per square foot
- Heavy coverage – 1/4 pounds per square foot
- Full coverage – 5-8 pounds per square foot
Apart from having beautiful color combinations, there is another much-valued advantage from having a 100% epoxy flake floor. They help in hiding an unsightly floor due to cracking, holes, patchwork and more. With a properly applied epoxy flake floor, you should never see the concrete, thus hiding existing defects.
